The interdisciplinary performance "Success is Within Your Palm," created by the Innovation Center for Art and Technology of the National Taiwan University of Arts (NTUA), has won the Gold Award in the Experiential & Immersive - Live Experiences category at the 2024 U.S. MUSE Creative Awards. This marks the Center's second consecutive award following last year's "Project F: To the Future You," showcasing the influence of Taiwanese puppetry culture on the international stage and highlighting the infinite possibilities of combining technology with traditional art.
The MUSE Creative Awards was established by the International Awards Associates (IAA) in the United States, specifically to honor outstanding professionals and teams that excel in the creative industry. The purpose of the awards is to recognize creative works that inspire and impact audiences, with judging criteria focus on innovation, design quality, execution details, and overall impact, making it a prestigious international accolade.
"Success is Within Your Palm" is based on a research project promoted by the National Science and Technology Council titled "Interdisciplinary Integration and Innovative Research Program on Technology and Art", with Associate Professor Dr. Chun-I Lee from the Department of Multimedia Animation Arts at NTUA serving as the sub-project leader of "The Future of Glove Puppet Theater: Human-Computer Interaction, Mixed Reality, and Puppetry Aesthetics". This project explores how to merge traditional puppetry with modern technology, injecting new life into this traditional art form. "Success is Within Your Palm" is a significant outcome of this research, using modern technology to create new performance methods and viewing experiences for Taiwanese puppetry.
The performance is adapted from the legend of the origins of puppet theater, telling the fantastical journey of a Ming Dynasty scholar, Bing-Lin Liang. The storyline integrates traditional opera elements and showcases the interaction between puppet figures, virtual puppets, and live actors across three acts, reflecting the coexistence of tradition and emerging forms.
Technically, the team developed a "Body Skeleton Conversion System," which allows the performer’s movements to be instantly mapped onto the virtual puppet, enabling cross-domain performances through holographic projection. This combination not only breaks the limitations of traditional puppetry, which is confined to palm control, but also expands the performance space and expressive techniques of puppet theater.
This gold award affirms the innovative achievements of "Success is Within Your Palm" in merging art and technology and further demonstrates National Taiwan University of Arts' excellence in the field of tech art. Looking ahead, the Innovation Center for Art and Technology will continue to promote cross-disciplinary creations that combine traditional arts and technology, explore more diverse forms of performance, and actively advance the international development of Taiwanese culture, ensuring that Taiwan's creative energy continues to shine on the global stage.
