Introduction to the Department

The Department (School) of Graphic Communication Arts welcomed its first class in 1955 as one of an initial three core degree programs offered by the school now known as the National Taiwan University of the Arts (NTUA). The program was previously administered, respectively, as the Printed Arts Department and the Department of Graphic Arts under NTUA’s predecessors, the National Taiwan Academy of Arts and National Taiwan College of Arts. Reflecting changes in technology and the marketplace, the department was reorganized as the Department of Graphic Communication Arts when the school was reorganized as the National Taiwan University of the Arts in 2001. Today’s students benefit from strong educational curricula that integrate the arts, technology and media communications. Over five decades, our department has been the incubator that has launched the successful careers of many graphic communication arts professionals.

The Department (School) of Graphic Communication Arts, administered under the College of Communications, is the most unique of NTUA’s academic programs Major fields of study are organized within four colleges (the Colleges of Fine Arts, Communications, Design and Performing Arts), offering one PhD track, 5 independent master’s track programs and 14 undergraduate degree programs. All students are encouraged to make full use of the wealth of university resources. Apart from the exceptional opportunities to enhance learning in the field of graphic communication arts, students can take advantage of opportunities to broaden themselves in music, drawing, dance, sculpting, the cinema and performance theater as well as to develop professional competencies in fields such as multimedia animation design, industrial design, broadcasting and television, and even historic site restoration. Department students are encouraged to create their own ideal study plan, and may elect a second major or minor in another NTUA degree program. With an educational experience combining variety and substance, graduates from NTUA’s Department of Graphic Communication Arts possess the breadth of knowledge and technical skills essential for success in today’s competitive professional marketplace.
