Greater Taipei Arts Festival 2016 (GTAF 2016) is a grand-scale international event, first initiated and arranged by the National Taiwan University of Art (NTUA) to connect the major performances, exhibitions and other art activities slated for the Greater Taipei Area. It will begin with the Greater Taipei Biennial of Contemporary Arts scheduled to commence in November, with French philosopher and sinologist François Jullien as the curator and 30 international renowned artists from 10 countries.
NTUA President Chih-Cheng Chen, since assuming presidency around one year ago, has been committed to incorporating resources from the government, industry, and academia to push for the birth of GTAF 2016, a momentous milestone for Taiwan’s cross-border exchange with other countries around the international art community. With the longest history of art education and widest range of art branches, NTUA is the most professional university for art education in Taiwan, offering full-fledged art-training courses. In order to further spread its art development momentum, NTUA has extended its artistic influence to Banqiao District, and now even to cover the whole Greater Taipei Area. Thus, the Art Museum and Fine Art College within its campus for the first time collaborate in preparing for the GTAF 2016, in a hope to combine the potency of the academic institutions, art associations, government sectors, and other civil groups for higher efficiency in application of artistic resources. Meanwhile, it’s aimed at providing a perfect and diverse exhibition and performance platform for local artists, so as to present the strength of Taiwan’s art creation on one hand and promote international art interactions on the other hand.
In a bid to have GTAF 2016 assimilate into international society and meanwhile maintaining the Oriental cultural foundation, NTUA President Chih-Cheng Chen particularly took a trip to visit French philosopher and sinologist François Jullien in March this year, to have his nod for being the curator of the Greater Taipei Biennial of Contemporary Arts 2016. Prof. François Jullien was president of the Association Française d'Etudes Chinoises (1988–1990), president of the Association Française d'Etudes Chinoises (1988–1990), director of the East Asia department (UFR) of Paris Diderot University–Paris VII (1990–2000), and director of both the Institut de la Pensée Contemporaine and the Centre Marcel-Granet. He was a senior member of the Institut Universitaire de France from 2001 to 2011 and is the current Chair of Alterity at the Fondation Maison des Sciences de l'Homme (Paris).
At the Greater Taipei Biennial of Contemporary Arts, Prof. François Jullien will present a great exhibition under the theme of “Dé-coïncidence — d’où viennent l’art et l’existence?” (De-coincidence—Where do art and existence come from?). While it helps to bring Taiwan’s exhibition and performance activities to a platform of greater exposure in the international society, Prof. François Jullien’s insightful and visionary thinking will unveil a substantial dialog of art culture in the East and the West. The Greater Taipei Biennial of Contemporary Arts will gather both local and international artists, including around 30 ones from the 10 countries: Britain, the United States, France, China, Japan, Hongkong, Australia, Italy, Turkey, and Czech. Mr. François Jullien is invited to visit at the NTUA on September 19 (Monday).
