Introduction -
Establishment of the Art Department dates back to 1962, when the university was known as the National Taiwan Academy of Arts. In 1964, evening classes were added to the department, and in 1996, the university underwent another change and was renamed National Taiwan College of Arts. Along with the change, the Art Department was renamed School of Fine Arts; which included the Chinese Painting Group and Western Painting Group. On August 1st 2001, the university changed its name again and became what is now National Taiwan University of Arts, and in 2002, the two divisions of the Art Department became two different majors. The Chinese Painting Group became Calligraphy and Painting Arts Department, and with mission of foresightedness and macroscopic, the department will continue to work toward unique, ethnic, academic, professional, innovative, worldwide and international directions. Throughout its history, our department has played an important role in Taiwan’s painting, calligraphy, and seal carving development.
In 2002 the Chinese Painting Group became an independent major and started to recruit undergraduate students. The Master Program was derived from the university’s Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Group under Plastic Art Master program; which was founded in the year 2000 with a total of 5 groups: Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Group, Western Painting Group, Visual Communication Design Group, Crafts Design Group, and Sculpture Group. Executive Master Program was also added to the department in 2001 and was categorized into Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Group, Western Painting Group, and Visual Communication Design Group. The Chinese Calligraphy and Painting Group of Plastic Art Graduate School officially returned to be under the Calligraphy and Painting Arts Department in 2006. The department’s Ph.D. Program was passed and set up in 2009, and officially recruiting students in 2010.
Focus of the Department -
The department’s faculty members are all carefully selected, each member is an expert in their areas of studies and is devoted to train outstanding researchers and creators, and encourages students to inherit tradition and to be innovative in their creations. In addition, the university’s School of Fine Art offers interdisciplinary courses for students to cultivate diverse and groundbreaking visions.
Courses are planned and scheduled in accordance with the students’ interests and progress, in order to build strong and steady roots, to combine eastern and western aesthetics, to augment the ancient with the taste of modern, to have rich knowledge and to establish exceptional creation basis.
Students will be taught the importance of local community and community cultural development, and to promote ethnic diversity while building modern and individual artistic style.
Through international cultural academic interaction, create world outlook, international learning environment, and to cultivate creation mind of big pattern.
Academic programs:
Undergraduate Program, B.A. (Daytime Class, Evening Class, Continuing Education Class)
Daytime: Recruit senior high school and vocational high school graduates. Students will need to apply for the university and take the Academic Branch Distribution Test held by the College Entrance Examination Center. When accepted, students will enroll in daytime classes for four years to be granted degree.
Evening classes: Recruit senior high school and vocational high school graduates who are ambitious in artistic creation. The school recruits students independently, meaning students will be taking entrance exams offered by the school. When accepted, students will be expected to take evening and weekend classes for four years to be granted degree.
Two-year system continuing education: Recruit students graduated from five-year junior college or vocational college/high school graduates who have studied and majored in related or similar courses. The school recruits students independently, meaning students will be taking entrance exams offered by the school. When accepted, students will be expected to take classes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday for two years to be granted degree.
Graduate School, Master Program (Daytime class and Executive class)
Daytime: Recruit all public or private college graduates. School recruits independently, meaning students will be taking entrance exams offered by the school. When accepted, students will enroll in day time classes and allowed two to four years to finish degree.
Executive Classes: Recruit all public and private college graduates. School recruits independently, meaning students will be taking entrance exams offered by the school. When accepted, students will enroll in weekend classes with three years to finish degree.
Graduate School, Ph.D. Program: Recruit all public and private college graduates with Master Degree. Students will be allowed two to seven years to earn their degrees.
Teaching and Courses
Daytime: 4 years, courses will focus on painting, calligraphy, and seal carving creation and research. Require a total of 132 units or more to graduate..
Evening: 4 years, courses will focus on painting, calligraphy, and seal carving creation and research. Require a total of 132 units or ore to graduate. Classes will be held on evenings and Saturdays.
Continuing Education:2 years, courses will focus on painting, calligraphy, and seal carving creation and research. Three-year junior college graduates will require 60 units or more to graduate. Two-year and five-year junior/vocational school graduates will require 80 units or more to graduate. Students will enroll in Saturday and Sunday classes.

Graduate School: Master Program and Ph.D. Program:
Ph.D. Program: 36 credits required ( Including thesis 6units), Ph.D. students will be granted degree after passing degree qualification examination. After passing the examination, students will be able to propose review of their thesis, and after passing the oral thesis examination, degree of Ph.D. in Art will be granted.
Master Program: Requires 45 units (including thesis and thesis exhibition total of 9 units); Minimum of 9 units per semester during the first year, and minimum of 3 units per semester during the second year (not including the thesis and exhibition). Course planning will be based on both creation performance and theory. Aside from completing 45units, students will need to pass both exhibition review and oral thesis review to be granted their Master degree.
